THE STORY

Rubies of Mogok

For generations, Burma — now Myanmar — has been one of the world’s most celebrated sources of ruby. Among its most famous localities is Mogok, a region whose name has become almost legendary in the history of gemstones.

Rubies from Burma have long been admired for their extraordinary colour: a rich, vibrant red sometimes described as “pigeon’s blood.” Their beauty made them some of the most prized gemstones in the world, associated with luxury, rarity and refinement. The Mogok region in particular became renowned for producing stones of remarkable intensity and character, and the phrase “Burmese ruby” remains closely linked with the finest quality ruby today.

The story image for this necklace can be drawn from a ruby specimen in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, catalogued as Corundum (var. ruby), NMNH 177816, from Myanmar [Burma], Mandalay. The museum describes it as a striking cluster of ruby crystals on a white limestone base, notable for its unusual crystal form, beautiful purplish-red colour and impressive size.

Inspired by the enduring beauty of these remarkable stones, the Ruby Burmese Star Necklace was created exclusively for the British Museum’s Burma to Myanmar exhibition. With its radiant star form, ruby-infused ceramic detailing and natural ruby cabochon centre, it celebrates Myanmar’s ruby heritage in a piece designed to be worn today.
