HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Jade Necklace is inspired by the remarkable tradition of jade craftsmanship in ancient China, particularly the beautifully worked ornaments of the Neolithic Liangzhu culture. Dating to approximately 3200–2000 BC, Liangzhu jade objects reveal the extraordinary skill of early Chinese craftsmen, who shaped and polished this exceptionally hard material using techniques developed long before modern metalworking tools. The necklace draws upon the enduring appreciation of jade's natural green colour, polished surface and restrained beauty, translating one of China's oldest decorative traditions into a contemporary jewellery design.

THE STORY

The Jade of Ancient China

More than five thousand years ago, in China's lower Yangtze River region, skilled craftsmen were transforming jade into extraordinary ornaments.

The Liangzhu culture (3200–2000 BC) became renowned for its remarkable jade craftsmanship. Using techniques of grinding, abrasion and polishing, artisans shaped this exceptionally hard stone into pendants, beads and ceremonial objects.

One surviving example, now preserved by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a slender jade pendant with a carefully worked suspension opening, reflecting the precision and skill of these early craftsmen.

Over successive Chinese dynasties, jade remained a treasured material, admired for its natural beauty, durability and associations with virtue and refinement. Its distinctive green tones became an enduring feature of Chinese jewellery and decorative arts.

The Jade Necklace celebrates this ancient tradition through slender 13 × 4 mm natural jade beads, separated by faceted 4 mm golden hematite. A contemporary design inspired by the craftsmanship and materials of ancient China.
