HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

Created exclusively for the British Museum's China's hidden century exhibition, the Qing Kingfisher Blossom Necklace celebrates the brilliantly coloured floral hair ornaments of Qing China. Its turquoise flower finds a particularly close historical parallel in the Hairpin inlaid with pearl and kingfisher feather in floral shape preserved by the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Dating to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), the historical ornament uses brilliant blue kingfisher feather to create a delicate flower centred upon a pearl. Shinar's design interprets this visual tradition through modern materials: turquoise kaolin ceramic enamel replaces historical kingfisher feather, while a 6 mm purple amethyst becomes the centre of the blossom.

THE STORY

The Blue Blossoms of Qing China

Few colours in historical jewellery are as captivating as the brilliant blue of Chinese kingfisher ornament. During the Qing dynasty, vivid kingfisher feathers were used to decorate intricate flowers, butterflies and hair ornaments, creating an extraordinary blue-green iridescence known through the tradition of dian cui (點翠).

A beautiful example survives in the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Dating to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), its delicate floral hairpin features brilliant kingfisher-feather petals surrounding a central pearl.

This remarkable tradition inspired the Qing Kingfisher Blossom Necklace, created exclusively for the British Museum’s China’s hidden century exhibition.

Eight rounded petals of turquoise kaolin ceramic enamel surround a polished 6 mm amethyst, their vivid colour recalling the luminous blue of historical kingfisher jewellery.

Modern ceramic enamel captures its distinctive turquoise beauty, while rich violet amethyst replaces the pearl at the heart of the historical flower.

A blossom once worn in the hair, reimagined as a jewel suspended in gold.
