THE STORY

Life Along the Nile

Each year, the waters of the Nile transformed the Egyptian landscape.

As the floodwaters receded, frogs appeared in great numbers across the wetlands and fertile ground. Their remarkable abundance became associated in ancient Egypt with new life and regeneration.

Water lilies were another familiar feature of the Nile landscape. Commonly called lotuses, their flowers closed at night and opened again in the morning, becoming closely associated with renewal and rebirth.

Both found their way into the objects and imagery of ancient Egypt. A remarkable bronze object now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art even preserves the image of a tiny frog resting upon a lotus pad.

Inspired by this ancient river landscape, the Frog of the Nile Necklace places a sculptural frog upon a textured lily pad — a playful reminder of the extraordinary life that flourished beside the Nile.
