HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Lapis Lazuli Earrings are inspired by the extraordinary history of one of antiquity's most prized materials. For thousands of years, lapis lazuli was carried over immense distances from its natural sources in Central Asia into the great trading networks of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. Its intense blue colour made it instantly recognisable, while tiny natural flecks of golden pyrite gave many stones a distinctive star-like appearance. Lapis appeared in jewellery, inlays, beads and decorative objects across ancient cultures, becoming one of the clearest material traces of early long-distance trade. Shinar reimagines that history in a restrained contemporary form, pairing elongated lapis beads with faceted golden hematite to allow the stone itself to remain the focus.

THE STORY

Lapis: The Blue Treasure of Egypt

Long before modern trade routes existed, lapis lazuli was already travelling vast distances.

Its extraordinary blue colour made it one of the most recognisable luxury materials of antiquity.

Natural lapis was quarried far from many of the cultures that eventually treasured it, meaning every ancient bead or fragment carried with it a story of movement, exchange and craftsmanship.

Across Mesopotamia, Egypt and the wider Mediterranean, lapis appeared in jewellery, inlays and treasured objects. Its deep blue surface, sometimes scattered with tiny golden pyrite inclusions, made it unlike almost any other material available in the ancient world.

The Lapis Lazuli Earrings draw on that long history.

Each elongated blue stone is left visually dominant, framed only by small faceted golden hematite beads and warm gold-coloured fittings.

The result is deliberately simple: a contemporary jewel built around a material that people have admired for thousands of years.

Designed to match the Lapis Lazuli Bracelet and Lapis Lazuli Necklace, the earrings form one of Shinar's most recognisable and enduring jewellery sets.

A stone once carried across kingdoms, worn again today.
