THE STORY

The Lotus of the Nile

Few flowers became as closely associated with ancient Egypt as the lotus.

Growing from the waters of the Nile, its daily cycle of opening toward the light made it a powerful symbol of renewal, beauty and continuity in Egyptian art and jewellery.

The lotus appeared across painted decoration, carved objects and personal adornment, becoming one of the most recognisable botanical forms of the ancient Egyptian world. Its spreading petals could be simplified into elegant geometric shapes while still remaining instantly recognisable.

Ancient craftsmen translated the flower into precious materials with remarkable skill. One surviving pendant in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, dating to approximately 1981–1550 BC, is fashioned from gold, carnelian and lapis lazuli, showing how the familiar lotus could become richly coloured personal adornment.

The combination of warm gold, vivid red carnelian and deep blue lapis gave these small ornaments extraordinary visual richness. Even at a miniature scale, Egyptian jewellers were able to turn forms from the natural world into highly refined decorative objects.

Inspired by this long tradition, the Lotus Enamel Necklace reimagines the ancient flower in green enamel and gold — a modern interpretation of a motif that flourished beside the Nile thousands of years ago.
