HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Roman Crocodile Coin Earrings are inspired by an AEGVPTO CAPTA silver denarius of Octavian, dating to around 27 BC. Following Octavian's victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII and the subsequent annexation of Egypt, coinage was issued celebrating the new Roman control of the kingdom. On the reverse of this denarius appears a crocodile, used as an unmistakable visual reference to Egypt. Above and below it is the inscription: AEGVPTO CAPTA meaning: “Egypt Captured.” Shinar reproduces the ancient reverse within an irregular golden coin form, retaining the crocodile, lettering and imperfect character of a design originally struck into silver more than two millennia ago.

THE STORY

The Symbol Of The Crocodile

In 30 BC, the ancient Mediterranean changed forever.

Following the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII, Octavian took control of Egypt, ending the independent Ptolemaic kingdom and removing the final major obstacle to his dominance of the Roman world.

The victory was commemorated in silver.

Among the coins associated with Octavian's Egyptian victory was a remarkable denarius bearing a crocodile and the words:

AEGVPTO CAPTA

“Egypt Captured.”

The crocodile became an instantly recognisable reference to Egypt and a powerful piece of Roman political imagery.

Only a few years later, Octavian became Augustus, Rome’s first emperor.

The Roman Crocodile Coin Necklace reimagines this surviving image as a contemporary jewel, preserving the ancient crocodile and inscription within an irregular golden pendant.

More than two thousand years later, the little crocodile still tells the story of a moment that reshaped the Mediterranean world.

A moment of Roman history, struck in silver and reimagined in gold.
