HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Classical Greek Pink Tourmaline Amphora Necklace draws inspiration from the remarkable tradition of miniature amphora-shaped jewellery created by ancient Greek goldsmiths. A particularly beautiful parallel survives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art: a pair of gold earrings with pendant amphorae dating to the 4th–3rd century BC, during the Late Classical or Hellenistic period. The surviving earrings measure approximately 3.7–3.8 cm long. Shinar's design translates the ancient amphora form into a necklace, retaining its scrolling handles, rounded body and intricate golden detailing while introducing a polished natural Pink Tourmaline at its centre.

THE STORY

The Golden Amphorae of Ancient Greece

In the workshops of ancient Greece, goldsmiths transformed precious metal into jewellery of astonishing delicacy.

Among their creations were tiny amphorae — miniature versions of the vessels that were such familiar objects throughout the Greek world.

Rather than being made to hold wine or oil, these vessels were fashioned in gold and suspended from jewellery.

A remarkable pair survives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dating to the 4th–3rd century BC, the earrings each carry a tiny gold amphora beneath the ear, demonstrating the extraordinary precision achieved by Greek goldsmiths on an intimate scale.

The amphora was reduced from a functional vessel to something precious enough to wear.

It is this tradition that inspired the Classical Greek Onyx Amphora Necklace.

Scrolling handles rise from the pendant, framing its rounded body, while delicate golden detailing recalls the intricate construction of ancient jewellery. At its centre, a polished natural black onyx gemstone introduces a deep, glossy contrast against the gold.

Shinar's interpretation moves the ancient form from the ear to the neck, transforming the miniature amphora into the focal point of a contemporary necklace.

More than two thousand years separate the two jewels, yet the fascination remains the same: taking one of the most recognisable forms of the ancient Greek world and making it precious enough to wear.
