HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Greek Bee Earrings are inspired by the bee imagery of ancient Ephesos, one of the great cities of Ionia on the western coast of Anatolia. The bee appeared on Ephesian coinage for centuries and became one of the city's most distinctive civic emblems. Early silver issues dating to around the 6th century BC already place the insect prominently within the coin design. Later coins frequently accompanied the bee with the letters E Φ, identifying its connection with Ephesos. Shinar transforms this ancient numismatic image into a pair of irregular golden medallions, preserving the central bee, surrounding marks and character of an object originally struck in silver more than two thousand years ago.

THE STORY

The Bee of Ephesos

For centuries, the bee was one of the defining emblems of ancient Ephesos.

The image appeared repeatedly on the city's coinage, sometimes standing alone and sometimes accompanied by the letters E Φ, identifying its connection with the Ionian city.

Some of the earliest surviving examples date to around the 6th century BC, when silver coins carried the small but remarkably detailed insect on their surface.

Its repeated appearance transformed the bee into something instantly recognisable — a visual signature carried on coins that passed from hand to hand throughout the ancient Mediterranean.

The Greek Bee Earrings take that ancient civic emblem and return it to something that can once again be worn.

Each textured golden medallion preserves the bee at its centre, surrounded by details inspired by the original coinage of Ephesos.

Designed to accompany the Greek Bee Necklace, the earrings transform one of Ionia's most enduring images into contemporary jewellery.
