HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Ionic Column Earrings are inspired by the broken columns and surviving architectural fragments of the ancient Mediterranean world. The Ionic order is immediately recognisable by the elegant spiral scrolls, or volutes, that decorate either side of its capital. Developed in the Greek world and used extensively throughout antiquity, Ionic architecture combined structural proportion with finely considered ornament. Shinar reduces this monumental architectural form to the scale of a jewel, preserving the scrolling capital and fluted column while presenting it as a fragment — reminiscent of the pieces of ancient architecture still scattered across archaeological landscapes today.

Rising from ruined temples, forgotten sanctuaries and once-magnificent cities, they endure as silent witnesses to centuries of ambition, craftsmanship and change.

Among the most recognisable is the Ionic column.

Its capital is distinguished by graceful spiral scrolls known as volutes, while the long fluted shaft gives the column an elegant sense of height and rhythm.

Fragments of these architectural forms survive throughout the Mediterranean today — sometimes standing upright, sometimes lying among fallen stone.

The Ionic Column Earrings take inspiration from those surviving fragments.
