THE STORY

The Coinage of Croesus

More than 2,500 years ago, the kingdom of Lydia became part of one of the most important chapters in the early history of coinage.

During the reign of King Croesus in the sixth century BC, coins struck at Sardis carried the confronted foreparts of a lion and bull — a remarkable design that remains instantly recognisable today.

Croesus' coinage formed part of an important development in monetary history, using separately refined gold and silver. After Lydia was conquered by Cyrus the Great around 546 BC, the familiar lion-and-bull coinage continued at Sardis under Persian rule.

The Croesus Lion & Bull Necklace was originally created exclusively for the British Museum's Luxury and power: Persia to Greece exhibition, reimagining this ancient design as jewellery for today.
