HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Caesar's Elephant Earrings are inspired by the celebrated elephant denarius of Julius Caesar, struck during the Roman Civil War around 49–48 BC. The coin depicts an elephant advancing across the reverse above a strange creature traditionally described in various ways as a serpent or dragon-like animal. Beneath appears the simple and unmistakable inscription: CAESAR The precise meaning of the imagery has been debated for centuries, but its association with Caesar during one of the most decisive moments of his career has made the coin one of the best-known designs of the late Roman Republic. Shinar translates the ancient silver denarius into an irregular golden medallion, retaining its elephant, mysterious creature and surviving inscription.

THE STORY

Caesar's Elephant

In 49 BC, Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his army and plunged the Roman Republic into civil war.

Around this extraordinary moment, a mint travelling with Caesar's forces began producing a silver denarius bearing one of the most memorable designs in Roman coinage.

An elephant advances across the coin, its feet above a strange serpent or dragon-like creature.

Beneath it appears a single unmistakable name:

CAESAR

The exact meaning of the imagery has been debated for centuries. Museum catalogues have variously described the creature beneath the elephant as a serpent or dragon, while different interpretations have been proposed for what the scene itself represented.

Whatever its precise meaning, the design became closely associated with Caesar during one of the defining moments of his career.

The Caesar's Elephant Earrings take this extraordinary surviving image and transform it into a pair of contemporary jewels.

Each irregular golden medallion retains the elephant, mysterious creature and ancient CAESAR inscription, preserving the character of a coin struck more than two thousand years ago.
