Jewelled Amphora Earrings

The amphora is one of the most recognisable forms of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet in the hands of Roman goldsmiths, this familiar vessel could be transformed into something remarkably small and precious.

Miniature amphora-shaped jewels survive from the Roman world, fashioned in gold and sometimes set with richly coloured gemstones.

Rather than serving any practical purpose, these tiny vessels turned a familiar object into personal ornament. Their narrow necks, curving handles and tapering bodies provided ancient craftsmen with a perfect framework for intricate goldwork, filigree and precious stones.

One surviving Roman example from Essex combines gold with pyrope garnet, demonstrating how vibrant colour could become the centrepiece of an elaborately worked amphora-shaped jewel.

A deep red crystal forms the heart of each pendant, surrounded by a polished golden frame and sweeping ornamental handles. Fine detailing around the upper section recalls the delicacy of ancient filigree, while the tapering silhouette preserves the unmistakable form of the amphora.

The result transforms an object associated with the movement of goods across the Roman Mediterranean into something altogether more intimate — a miniature vessel designed simply to be beautiful.
