HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Mosaic Tile Earrings are inspired by the coloured tesserae used throughout Roman mosaic decoration. Roman craftsmen created extraordinarily complex images and patterns from thousands of individually cut pieces of stone, ceramic and glass. Even the smallest tessera formed part of a much larger composition. Rich red tones appeared alongside cream, ochre, green and black, creating decorative borders, geometric arrangements and detailed scenes across homes, villas and public buildings. Shinar takes the simplest element of that tradition — the individual square tile — and transforms it into jewellery. Deep red ceramic enamel provides the saturated colour of the mosaic surface, while a faceted natural carnelian bead adds a second warm red tone beneath.

A Thousand Pieces of Colour

A Roman mosaic began with something remarkably small.

A single tessera.

Cut from stone, ceramic or glass, each tiny piece carried only one fragment of colour. Individually they were simple; placed together by skilled craftsmen, they became elaborate borders, geometric patterns and vast pictorial scenes.

Thousands could be required to complete a single floor.

Across the Roman world, surviving mosaics still preserve rich reds, warm ochres, creams and blacks after almost two thousand years.

The Mosaic Tile Earrings celebrate the smallest element within those extraordinary compositions.

At the centre of each earring is a smooth square of deep red ceramic enamel, surrounded by a simple golden frame. Beneath it hangs a faceted 4 mm natural carnelian, introducing the translucent red of a gemstone prized throughout antiquity.

Together they transform the geometry and colour of Roman decorative art into a small piece of wearable history.
