THE STORY

The Running Hound of Rome

More than two thousand years ago, a hound ran across the surface of a Roman coin.

Struck in 74 BC, during the final decades of the Roman Republic, a silver denarius issued by C. Postumius carried a striking image on its reverse: a lean hound racing to the right above a spear.

The animal is shown at full speed.

Its body stretches forward, its legs extended in motion, giving the tiny silver image a remarkable sense of energy. Beneath it lies the spear, while the name C POSTVMI identifies the moneyer responsible for the issue.

Roman coinage was designed to communicate through compact, powerful images. Animals, symbols, military objects and figures could all carry meaning across a surface scarcely larger than a modern coin.

The Roman Hound Denarius Earrings reinterpret this surviving image in gold.

Each circular pendant preserves the irregular, time-worn character of an ancient struck coin while bringing the running hound forward as the centre of the design.

What was once impressed into silver and passed from hand to hand across the Roman Republic has been transformed into a pair of golden jewels designed to be worn more than two millennia later.

A Roman hound, struck again in gold.
