HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Roman Star Mosaic Necklace is inspired by the surviving mosaic pavements of the Roman town house preserved beneath Canterbury Roman Museum. The Canterbury mosaics feature geometric flower patterns and interlaced borders formed from individually placed coloured tesserae. This particular inspiration comes from one of the surviving corridor panels preserved in situ beneath the modern city. Its radiating floral geometry is reimagined in the necklace as a richly textured golden rosette, transforming the decorative language of Roman Britain into wearable jewellery

THE STORY

Beneath Roman Canterbury

Beneath the streets of modern Canterbury survive the remains of an extraordinary Roman town house.

Its mosaic floors were formed from hundreds of small coloured pieces of stone and tile, arranged into geometric flowers, borders and repeating patterns. Their scale and intricacy reveal the wealth and craftsmanship once contained within the building.

The Story Image for the Roman Star Mosaic Necklace shows one of the surviving corridor panels now preserved at Canterbury Roman Museum. The photograph records the very panel that was reportedly the first to be discovered, with the mark of the pickaxe that uncovered it still visible in the ancient floor.

The necklace takes inspiration from the radiating floral geometry found within these Roman mosaics. Its eight-pointed golden form surrounds a layered central flower, while finely textured surfaces echo the countless tesserae from which the original pavement was constructed.

What once formed part of a Roman floor beneath Canterbury becomes a small piece of jewellery designed to be worn today.
