Roman Voyager Amphora Earrings

Across the ancient Mediterranean, the amphora was a vessel made to travel.

Packed into the holds of merchant ships and carried between distant ports, amphorae moved with the currents of Roman commerce. Within their ceramic bodies travelled wine, olive oil and other goods destined for cities and settlements hundreds of miles from where their journeys began.

Their forms became familiar across the Roman world.

Narrow necks, paired handles and distinctive bodies allowed amphorae to be carried, stored and packed together aboard ships. Today, broken fragments and complete vessels survive at archaeological sites across the Mediterranean — from ancient harbours and settlements to shipwrecks resting beneath the sea.

The Roman Voyager Amphora Earrings do not reproduce one particular ancient vessel.

Instead, they reinterpret the amphora as an archaeological memory.

A simplified vessel appears at the centre of each irregular golden medallion, framed by curling lines and scattered ornament. The uneven edge and textured surface suggest an object marked by age, as though a fragment of the ancient world had been recovered and transformed into jewellery.

The Roman Voyager Amphora design was also supplied to Warner Bros. for Game of Thrones, connecting Shinar's ancient-inspired jewellery with a fictional world shaped by its own histories, voyages and material culture.

From ancient cargo hold to contemporary jewel, the amphora remains a powerful symbol of movement across the Mediterranean.
