Trajan’s Column Earrings

In the heart of Rome stands one of the ancient world’s most extraordinary records of military life.

Trajan’s Column was dedicated in AD 113, its towering marble shaft wrapped in a continuous spiral of carved relief telling the story of Emperor Trajan’s campaigns in Dacia.

The narrative unfolds across the stone almost like an ancient illustrated scroll.

Roman soldiers march through unfamiliar landscapes, build roads and fortifications, cross rivers, construct camps and prepare for battle. Elsewhere, armies clash, settlements appear and the emperor himself repeatedly enters the story.

Thousands of individual figures were carved into the monument, creating an extraordinary visual record of the Roman military world.

Created exclusively for the British Museum’s Legion: life in the Roman army exhibition, the Trajan’s Column Earrings transform this vast monument into miniature wearable reliefs.

Each rectangular pendant has the appearance of a small fragment taken from an ancient carved panel. Raised figures emerge from a richly textured surface, preserving the crowded movement and sculptural depth that make Trajan’s Column so remarkable.

A story once carved around a monumental column in Rome is reduced to the scale of a jewel — allowing a fragment of the Roman army’s visual history to be carried once again.
