THE STORY

The Tortoises of Aegina

Long before coins routinely carried the portraits of kings and emperors, the ancient Greek island of Aegina became associated with one of the most distinctive images in Greek coinage: the tortoise.

Situated in the Saronic Gulf, Aegina was a maritime community with connections across the ancient Greek world. Its famous silver staters became an important part of the early story of Greek coinage.

Across their surfaces appeared the island's unmistakable tortoise.

Small enough to be held in the palm of a hand, these pieces travelled through an increasingly connected Mediterranean world — objects of trade and exchange that have survived for thousands of years.

It is this extraordinary ancient imagery that inspired the Aegina Tortoise Necklace.

Rather than removing the irregular character of ancient coinage, our design celebrates it. The uneven perimeter, textured surface and raised tortoise motif recall an object shaped in another age, reimagined as jewellery for today.
