HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Grecian Carnelian Necklace was inspired not by a single ancient artefact, but by the enduring beauty of carnelian itself. Ancient Greek craftspeople shaped and engraved the richly coloured stone into miniature gems and personal ornaments. Shinar's necklace continues that appreciation of the material, allowing a polished natural carnelian to become the centre of the jewel.

THE STORY

The Beauty of Carnelian

More than two thousand years ago, an ancient Greek craftsperson took a tiny piece of glowing red carnelian and carved something wonderfully familiar into its surface: a dog chewing a bone.

Created around 450–400 BCE, the miniature gem survives today in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Measuring only 1.6 centimetres long, its subject is remarkably intimate — not a monumental ruler or distant legend, but an ordinary hound captured in a moment of everyday life.

The choice of material was anything but ordinary.

Carnelian had been prized for centuries for its extraordinary natural colour. Polished surfaces reveal shades of fiery orange, warm amber and deep translucent red, while the hardness of the stone allowed skilled gem cutters to engrave remarkably intricate designs on an incredibly small scale.

The Grecian Carnelian Necklace celebrates that same material.

It was not copied from the ancient hound gem, nor from any single archaeological jewel. Instead, Shinar's design places a polished natural carnelian gemstone at its centre, allowing the colour and character that fascinated ancient craftspeople to speak for itself.

Thousands of years separate the two objects, yet at the heart of both is the same beautiful stone.

Carnelian — treasured in antiquity, worn today.
