THE STORY

The Carnelian of Ancient Egypt

More than four thousand years ago, beside the Nile, skilled Egyptian craftsmen were transforming fragments of richly coloured stone into ornaments of extraordinary beauty. Among the materials they worked was carnelian, a variety of chalcedony admired for its glowing shades of orange, red and reddish-brown.

Polished into beads and threaded into necklaces, carnelian formed part of a long tradition of Egyptian decorative craftsmanship. Its warm colour contrasted beautifully with gold, faience and other gemstones, creating jewellery that reflected both the technical skill and artistic preferences of its makers.

At Lisht, near the ancient Egyptian royal pyramids, excavations undertaken by The Metropolitan Museum of Art between 1920 and 1922 uncovered thousands of beads scattered among the surface sands surrounding the North Pyramid. These included carnelian, amethyst, quartz, gold, faience and shell.

Among the surviving treasures is a remarkable string of polished carnelian ball beads, now preserved in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dating from approximately 1981–1295 BC, the necklace offers a tangible connection to a world in which natural gemstones were carefully selected, shaped and assembled into personal adornments.

The survival of these beads across millennia reveals the enduring appeal of carnelian. Although their original owners are unknown, the richness of their colour and the care taken in their manufacture remain immediately recognisable.

Inspired by this ancient tradition, the Shinar Jewels Carnelian Necklace brings the beauty of natural carnelian into a contemporary form. Its slender polished gemstones, complemented by golden hematite, celebrate the materials and craftsmanship that connected jewellery makers across thousands of years.
