HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Cat of Kemet Earrings take their inspiration from the many feline images and figurines that survive from ancient Egypt. Cats were part of the living landscape of Egyptian towns, homes and agricultural communities. Their natural hunting ability made them useful around grain stores and settlements, while their distinctive posture and elegant silhouette made them an enduring subject for artists and craftspeople. The accompanying Story Image shows an ancient Egyptian cat figurine dating to the Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 664–30 BC. Shinar does not reproduce that particular object directly. Instead, the earrings draw upon the broader ancient Egyptian tradition of representing the cat in a poised, recognisable profile. Beside the cat appears an ankh, an ancient symbol associated with life, completing a simple composition inspired by the visual language of the Nile Valley.

THE STORY

The Cats of Kemet

Beyond the monuments of ancient Egypt was a living world of homes, fields and animals.

Among them was the cat — a familiar companion in Egyptian settlements, valued for controlling rodents and admired for its elegant, watchful form.

Ancient artists captured cats seated upright in figurines and reliefs, preserving a silhouette that remains instantly recognisable today.

The Story Image dates to 664–30 BC, showing how enduring this feline form became in Egyptian art.

The Cat of Kemet Earrings continue that tradition, pairing a seated cat with an ankh on a textured golden medallion.

Rather than copying one ancient object, the design celebrates the lasting connection between people, animals and the natural world.
