THE STORY

The Horse of Cunobelin

Cunobelin was a powerful ruler of south-east Britain in the decades before the Roman invasion of AD 43. His name appears on coins across the region controlled by the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes, linking his authority to Camulodunum—modern Colchester.

This gold stater combines a naturalistic horse with a small floral emblem and the abbreviated inscription CVNO. Its other side shows an ear of corn, a design that may have expressed prosperity, fertile land and the wealth of a flourishing Iron Age kingdom.

More than a means of exchange, coins such as this were statements of power. Their imagery carried the name and symbols of a British ruler through the communities, markets and landscapes of ancient Britain.
