HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

Created exclusively for the British Museum’s China’s hidden century exhibition, the Chinese Amethyst Necklace draws upon the visual richness of Chinese decorative art. Its concentric circular composition, intricate geometric surface and central coloured hardstone can be explored alongside surviving luxury objects from the Qing dynasty. A Qianlong-period circular jade pendant in the Cleveland Museum of Art provides a particularly beautiful comparison for the use of circular form and dense surrounding ornament, while a Qianlong-period amethyst snuff bottle at Princeton University Art Museum demonstrates the use of amethyst itself within Qing luxury objects. These museum pieces provide historical context for the necklace and are not presented as its direct design sources.

THE STORY

Amethyst in the Age of Qianlong

At the centre of the Chinese Amethyst Necklace lies a single polished stone: amethyst, glowing from violet to deep purple as it catches the light.

The stone provides a beautiful point of connection with the material world of eighteenth-century Qing China.

During the long reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736–1795), extraordinary craftsmanship was lavished upon objects made to be seen, handled and examined closely. Hardstones offered craftsmen not simply colour, but a material whose natural character could become part of the finished object.

A remarkable survivor in the Princeton University Art Museum brings amethyst directly into this world. Dating to the Qianlong reign period, the small Chinese snuff bottle is carved from amethyst and measures only 6 cm high. Its survival provides tangible evidence of this unmistakable purple stone being transformed into a precious personal object in Qing China.

The period also produced exquisite circular ornaments.

A circular jade pendant preserved by the Cleveland Museum of Art dates to the Qianlong reign, 1735–1795. Carved from jade and measuring 7.7 cm across, its decoration is contained within a strongly defined circular composition. The eye moves from its centre outward through ornament before being drawn back into the complete form of the disc.

Placed together, the two objects reveal complementary sides of Qing decorative art: the intense colour and beauty of amethyst, and the disciplined elegance of the ornamented circle.

Created exclusively for the British Museum’s China’s hidden century exhibition, the Chinese Amethyst Necklace brings these qualities together in a contemporary jewel.

A polished 12 mm amethyst dominates the centre of the design. Rather than surrounding it with an elaborate figurative scene, the 24 mm circular pendant frames the stone with tightly arranged geometric decoration. Repeated lines and angular forms radiate around the amethyst in concentric bands, giving the gold surface texture and depth while leaving the purple stone unmistakably at the heart of the piece.

The necklace is not a reproduction of either museum object. They instead illuminate the historical world with which its design converses — a world in which colour, precious hardstones, meticulous ornament and intimate objects could all become expressions of extraordinary craftsmanship.

Centuries later, amethyst remains just as compelling.

Purple at the centre. Gold all around. A fragment of Qing splendour, made to be worn.
