The Estatira Earrings are inspired by the rosette and floral ornament found throughout ancient Greek gold jewellery. Greek goldsmiths developed an extraordinary vocabulary of botanical forms, transforming petals, leaves, buds and flowers into intricate ornaments for the body. The rosette became one of the most enduring of these motifs. Its ordered circular form allowed goldsmiths to create richly symmetrical designs while still drawing inspiration from the natural world. The accompanying Story Image shows an ancient Greek gold rosette pendant with an acorn, demonstrating how floral forms could be translated into detailed golden jewellery.
