HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Florus Earrings are inspired by the flower coinage of Lucius Aquillius Florus, issued in Rome around 19 BC during the reign of Augustus. The original denarius shows an open flower at its centre, surrounded by the moneyer's name: L. AQVILLIVS FLORVS III VIR The floral image creates a striking contrast with the more familiar portraits, military symbols and political imagery associated with Roman coinage. Shinar translates this ancient design into a pair of circular golden earrings, retaining the flower, inscription and textured character of the original coin.

THE STORY

The Flower of Florus

Around 19 BC, during the reign of Augustus, Lucius Aquillius Florus served as one of Rome's moneyers — officials responsible for overseeing the production of coinage.

Among the coins issued in his name was an unusually delicate design.

At its centre appears an open flower, surrounded by the inscription identifying Florus.

The image is simple, but distinctive.

Rather than celebrating conquest or military power, the coin preserves a botanical form — a small reminder that the visual language of Rome could be decorative as well as political.

The Florus Earrings take this ancient flower and return it to something that can once again be worn.

Each golden medallion preserves the radiating petals and circular inscription of the Roman original, transforming a coin struck more than two thousand years ago into a contemporary jewel.

An ancient flower, cast in gold for today.
