THE STORY

The Flower of Florus

Around 19 BC, Lucius Aquillius Florus served as one of Rome’s moneyers: officials responsible for overseeing the production of coinage. A denarius issued in his name pairs the portrait of Augustus with an open flower on its reverse, encircled by the inscription L AQVILLIVS FLORVS III VIR.

The flower is an unusually delicate subject for a Roman coin. The Münzkabinett Berlin interprets it as an allusion to Florus’ cognomen, connected with the Latin word flos, meaning flower. It is a small and personal image on a coin made during the early years of Augustus’ new imperial order.

The FLORUS NECKLACE takes its inspiration from this ancient floral emblem: a quiet detail from Roman monetary history, reimagined as jewellery to be worn today.
