HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Freshwater Pearl Bracelet is inspired by the exceptional appreciation of pearls in ancient Roman jewellery, where their soft lustre and natural beauty made them highly desirable personal ornaments. During the Roman Imperial period, pearls became particularly fashionable among wealthy women. Surviving examples of Roman jewellery reveal beautifully worked gold earrings adorned with suspended pearls, demonstrating the skill with which ancient craftsmen combined precious metals and luminous natural materials. Among these surviving treasures is a first-century Roman gold and pearl earring, now preserved by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its delicately suspended pearls demonstrate the elegant relationship between gold and natural ornament that made Roman pearl jewellery so distinctive. Shinar draws upon this enduring contrast through a contemporary bracelet of freshwater pearls and golden detailing, celebrating the beauty of the material rather than reproducing a particular ancient jewel.

THE STORY

The Pearls of Rome

Few natural treasures were admired more deeply in ancient Rome than pearls.

Drawn from the waters of distant seas and rivers, these remarkable ornaments possessed a beauty that required no carving or polishing. Their delicate lustre, gentle colouring and luminous surfaces made them among the most desirable materials in Roman jewellery.

For wealthy Roman women, pearls became particularly fashionable. Ancient jewellers combined them with gold, creating elaborate earrings, necklaces and personal ornaments that reflected both skilled craftsmanship and the prosperity of their owners. One remarkable surviving example is a gold and pearl earring dating to the first century CE, now preserved by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Known as crotalia, earrings of this type featured suspended pearls that could move gently against one another, producing a delicate sound when worn. Examples discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum reveal their popularity during the Roman Imperial period.

Yet the lasting appeal of pearls lies in their natural simplicity.

Each pearl develops its own delicate surface, soft lustre and individual character. Unlike gemstones shaped through cutting and polishing, pearls are treasured for the beauty created within the mollusc itself.

The Freshwater Pearl Bracelet continues this appreciation through a carefully arranged strand of natural freshwater pearls, punctuated by warm golden accents.

The luminous beauty of pearls, treasured since antiquity.
