HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Grape Vine Earrings are inspired by the grapevines that appeared throughout Roman wall painting and decorative art. Vines, curling tendrils, leaves and clusters of fruit decorated Roman interiors and reflected a landscape in which vineyards were a familiar sight. Grapes were cultivated throughout the Mediterranean and became an instantly recognisable part of both everyday agriculture and Roman decorative imagery. The accompanying Story Image preserves this botanical tradition in a surviving Roman fresco. Shinar translates the vine into an irregular golden medallion, allowing its leaves, stems and clusters of grapes to spread naturally across the textured surface.

THE STORY

Among the Vines of Rome

Across the Roman world, grapevines belonged to both the landscape and the decorative arts.

Vineyards supplied one of antiquity's most familiar crops, while leaves, curling stems and bunches of grapes appeared across painted walls, gardens and decorative objects.

Roman artists often allowed these botanical forms to spread freely across a surface, creating patterns filled with movement and natural detail.

The Grape Vine Earrings take inspiration from that visual world.

Across each textured golden medallion, a vine branches outward in miniature. Leaves unfold along its stems while tiny grape clusters hang between them, echoing the imagery preserved in Roman frescoes.

Designed as the companion to the Grape Vine Necklace, the earrings turn an ancient Mediterranean plant into something that can once again be worn.
