HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Greek Bee Ring draws inspiration from the symbolic importance of bees in the ancient Greek world, particularly their association with Artemis and the city of Ephesus. The bee appeared prominently on ancient Ephesian coinage, where its distinctive form became an emblem of civic identity. Bees were also connected with honey, ritual offerings and religious traditions throughout the Greek world. Shinar reimagines this ancient symbol as a polished golden signet ring, placing a delicately sculpted bee at the centre of its geometric face. The design was also selected for Warner Bros.' Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, bringing its historically inspired character into the world of television costume production. Rather than reproducing a particular surviving Greek artefact, the ring celebrates a symbol that remained recognisable across centuries of ancient history.

THE STORY

The Sacred Bee of Ancient Greece

Across the ancient Greek world, the bee was far more than a familiar creature of the natural landscape. Its honey was valued as a precious food, offered in religious ceremonies and associated with abundance, while the remarkable organisation of the hive inspired admiration for the industrious nature of bees.

Nowhere was the bee more recognisable than at Ephesus, an ancient Greek city on the coast of Asia Minor. The city was celebrated for its great sanctuary of Artemis, one of the most important religious centres of the ancient world.

On the silver coins issued by Ephesus, the bee appeared as a distinctive civic emblem. These beautifully struck coins carried the image of the bee across the ancient Mediterranean, preserving its delicate form in silver for more than two thousand years.

The Greek Bee Ring draws upon this remarkable history. A finely detailed bee rests at the centre of its golden signet face, its wings spread across the polished surface in a design that recalls the enduring appeal of ancient Greek ornament.

Yet this ancient inspiration has also found a place within modern storytelling.

Selected for Warner Bros.' Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, the ring reflects the enduring fascination with historical jewellery and the decorative traditions of the ancient world.

From the silver coinage of Ephesus to the richly imagined worlds of contemporary television, the bee remains a symbol whose beauty transcends centuries.

An emblem once carried upon the coinage of an ancient city becomes a jewel to be worn today.
