THE STORY

The Endless Line

Across ancient Greece, decoration was often built from remarkably simple forms.

One of the most enduring was the meander.

Created from a continuous line that turns repeatedly at right angles, the pattern could run around the rim of a vessel, frame a painted scene or form a decorative border across architecture and objects.

Its effect came from repetition.

A single angular turn was simple. Repeated again and again, it became rhythm.

Fragments of Attic skyphoi preserved at The Metropolitan Museum of Art show parts of this distinctive design, painted more than two thousand years ago across the surfaces of ancient drinking vessels.

The Greek Meander Hoops take that continuous geometry and move it from pottery to jewellery.

The repeating key pattern travels around the outer curve of each hoop, set against a deep blue enamel ground and framed in polished gold.

The result is a contemporary earring built around one of the most recognisable visual languages of ancient Greece.

An ancient line, continuing in gold.
