THE STORY

The Octopus of Eretria

More than 2,500 years ago, the ancient Greek city of Eretria struck silver coins carrying an extraordinary image from the sea.

On one side appeared cattle, imagery frequently encountered on the city's early coinage. Turn the coin over, however, and an altogether more unusual creature emerged: an octopus, its tentacles curling outwards within the confines of an incuse square.

Eretria stood on Euboea, the long island lying just off the eastern coast of mainland Greece. The sea formed an important part of the world surrounding the city, and the octopus became one of the most memorable images to appear on its early silver coinage.

Surviving examples still preserve the wonderfully irregular character of these ancient coins. Their shapes are imperfect, their surfaces bear the marks of striking, and no two feel entirely alike.

Inspired by this remarkable coinage, the Greek Octopus Necklace reimagines the ancient creature in miniature — preserving its curling tentacles and unmistakable maritime character in a piece of jewellery made to be worn today.
