THE STORY

The Spirals of Antiquity

Some of the most enduring patterns of the ancient world began with remarkably simple shapes.

A line turned inward.

A curve repeated.

A spiral placed beside another spiral until a continuous decorative border began to form.

Across the Greek and wider Mediterranean world, these repeating forms appeared on pottery, architecture, mosaics and precious objects. Craftspeople transformed simple curves into elaborate bands of ornament that could frame a floor, encircle a vessel or divide one decorative scene from another.

Ancient mosaics preserve this visual language particularly beautifully.

Individual tesserae were arranged into sweeping spiral borders, geometric keys and rhythmic bands that carried pattern across large architectural surfaces. Even after centuries, their repeated curves still create a remarkable sense of movement.

The Greek Scroll Hoops reinterpret that decorative rhythm on a much smaller scale.

Miniature golden coils repeat around each hoop, forming a textured border reminiscent of the spirals and scrolls found throughout ancient Mediterranean design.

The result is not a reproduction of one particular ancient object, but a contemporary interpretation of a decorative language that survived across centuries.
