HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Greek Swan Earrings take their inspiration from a silver tetradrachm struck at Klazomenai, an ancient Ionian city on the western coast of Anatolia, around 375–360 BC. The surviving coin carries a striking image of a swan, its long neck curved gracefully while one wing rises across the body in a carefully modelled arrangement of feathers. Ancient Greek coinage frequently transformed animals from the surrounding natural world into distinctive civic imagery, creating designs that could become closely associated with individual cities. Shinar recreates the swan in warm gold, preserving its elegant profile and the irregular character of ancient struck metal.

THE STORY

The Swan of Klazomenai

More than 2,300 years ago, the ancient Greek city of Klazomenai struck a remarkable series of silver coins.

Among their surviving designs is a magnificent swan.

Its neck curves elegantly towards its body while a great wing rises behind it, every feather carefully arranged within the small circular surface of the coin.

For the people who handled these coins in antiquity, such images formed part of the visual identity of their cities. Animals, plants and other familiar forms could become instantly recognisable symbols carried from hand to hand across the ancient world.

The Greek Swan Earrings take this surviving image and transform it into a pair of golden medallions.

The irregular edges recall the character of ancient struck coinage, while the sculpted swan remains the centre of the design — its curved neck and raised wing preserved more than two millennia after the original was struck.

Designed to match the Greek Swan Coin Necklace, the earrings allow this graceful ancient image to be carried once again.
