HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Honey Bee Earrings are inspired by the ancient beekeeping traditions of Egypt and the surviving scenes that preserve the production of honey along the Nile. Ancient Egyptian beekeepers used horizontal cylindrical hives and controlled the bees with smoke before removing the comb. Honey was collected, processed and stored, making beekeeping part of a sophisticated agricultural landscape that existed thousands of years ago. The accompanying Story Image preserves a remarkable scene of honey gathering from the Tomb of Rekhmire at Thebes, dating to Egypt's 18th Dynasty. Shinar transforms the bee into a richly detailed golden medallion, celebrating not only the insect itself but the people who worked alongside it in the ancient Nile landscape.
