THE STORY

The Empress on the Coin

At the end of the second century AD, a new imperial dynasty emerged at the head of the Roman Empire.

At its centre was Julia Domna.

Born in Syria and married to the emperor Septimius Severus, Julia became one of the most prominent imperial women of her age. She accompanied the imperial court and became mother to the future emperors Caracalla and Geta.

Her portrait travelled throughout the Roman world on imperial coinage. Across gold, silver and bronze coins, Julia appears with an unmistakable profile and an elaborate hairstyle arranged in carefully sculpted waves — a distinctive image that survives on thousands of ancient coins today.

Coins were more than currency in the Roman Empire. Produced in enormous numbers and carried across vast distances, they placed the faces and names of the imperial household into the hands of people throughout the Roman world.

Created exclusively for the British Museum's Legion: life in the Roman army exhibition, the Julia Domna Necklace reimagines one of these surviving imperial portraits as jewellery — carrying a face from the Roman world into the present day.
