THE STORY

The Stone of Labrador

Along the Atlantic coast of northeastern Canada, the mineral-rich rocks of Labrador contain a distinctive variety of feldspar celebrated for its remarkable optical properties. Known as labradorite, the stone reveals shifting flashes of blue, green and gold, an effect called labradorescence, produced by the interaction of light with its internal crystalline structure.

Familiar to Indigenous Inuit communities long before its introduction to European mineralogical study, labradorite attracted scientific attention during the eighteenth century. In the 1770s, specimens collected along the Labrador coast reached European naturalists, where the mineral became recognised for its unusual iridescence and distinctive geological character.

As lapidary techniques developed, labradorite found a place among ornamental gemstones. Carefully cut and polished to reveal its changing colours, it became a material for decorative objects, gemstone beads and jewellery. Unlike stones prized for uniform colour, labradorite offered jewellers a naturally varied surface, with each polished piece revealing a different interplay of light and colour.

The Shinar Jewels Labradorite Necklace continues this tradition of gemstone craftsmanship. Slender, polished natural labradorite beads are arranged with faceted golden hematite, creating a refined contrast between the mineral's cool grey tones, flashes of blue iridescence and warm golden accents. A contemporary interpretation of the enduring relationship between natural gemstones and the art of personal adornment.
