THE STORY

The Beauty of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli has fascinated people for thousands of years.

Its colour is its first wonder: an intense, almost celestial blue, sometimes interrupted by white mineral veining and tiny golden flecks of pyrite. To ancient eyes, this was a material unlike ordinary stone — vivid, luxurious and immediately recognisable.

The stone was cherished across several great ancient cultures. In Mesopotamia, lapis appears in the extraordinary jewellery of ancient Ur, where it was combined with gold and carnelian in richly coloured compositions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the lapis used there originated in the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan, revealing the remarkable long-distance connections required to bring this precious material westward.

In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was also highly valued. Surviving Middle Kingdom jewellery combines it with gold and carnelian, while Egyptian craftsmen carved the stone into amulets and small precious objects. A lapis amulet now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, excavated at Lisht, dates to approximately 1981–1550 BC and preserves the same deep blue material admired thousands of years ago.

Its appeal was not confined to one place or period. Lapis travelled through networks that linked distant regions and became a luxury material known across the ancient Near East, Egypt and beyond. The stone itself carried a sense of distance and rarity — a piece of deep blue earth transported from remote mountains into royal workshops, temples and jewellery.

The Lapis Lazuli Pendant Necklace celebrates that history in a deliberately simple form. Rather than recreating one specific ancient object, it allows the natural gemstone itself to remain the centre of attention — its blue, its inclusions and the individuality of every stone.

A material admired across ancient cultures, carried forward into something made to be worn today.
