THE STORY

Vessels of the Mediterranean

The amphora is one of the most enduring forms to survive from the ancient Mediterranean world.

Recognisable by its narrow neck, two handles and vessel-shaped body, the amphora became a familiar object across centuries of ancient life. It appeared in domestic settings, workshops, markets and ports, serving practical needs while also becoming part of the visual language of everyday Roman life.

The Mediterranean was a world shaped by movement.

Under Roman rule, sea routes connected cities, provinces and distant coasts in a vast network of exchange. Goods travelled across these waters in enormous quantities, and vessels of many kinds became symbols of this connected world. Some were plain and practical, others more decorative, but all reflected the importance of trade, transport and daily use.

Archaeology preserves these forms in many ways.

They survive in the remains of buried Roman towns, in museum collections and in cargoes recovered from ancient shipwrecks resting beneath the sea. Their continued survival allows us to glimpse the lives, journeys and exchanges that shaped the ancient world.

The Mediterranean Amphora Necklace celebrates this enduring vessel form.

Its elegant handles, elongated body and delicate golden ornament reinterpret a familiar archaeological silhouette as a refined piece of wearable treasure — a small reminder of the beauty, movement and craftsmanship of the ancient Mediterranean.
