HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Minoan Seashell Earrings are inspired by the marine world surrounding ancient Crete. The people of Bronze Age Crete lived within an island landscape shaped by the sea, and marine forms became a distinctive part of Minoan visual culture. Shells, fish and other sea life appeared across decorative objects and pottery. A particularly beautiful archaeological parallel survives in a small Minoan terracotta shell pendant, now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dating broadly to c. 2200–1050 BC, the object preserves the familiar rounded, ribbed form of a natural shell in clay.Shinar reimagines that connection between jewellery, nature and the Aegean shoreline in warm gold.

THE STORY

The Shores of Minoan Crete

The sea was never far away in ancient Crete.

Around the island, rocky coves and beaches opened onto the Aegean, while generations of people lived, travelled and traded across its waters.

The natural world of the sea also entered Minoan art.

Marine creatures and shells appeared across pottery and small objects, preserving the forms of the coastline in materials such as clay.

One remarkable surviving object is a small terracotta shell pendant from Minoan Crete. Although made thousands of years ago, its rounded form and radiating ridges remain instantly recognisable today.

The Minoan Seashell Earrings continue that simple act of observation.

Each golden shell preserves the familiar ribbed surface of something that might have been gathered along an Aegean shore, translating a small fragment of the natural world into jewellery.
