HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

The Roman Crocodile Coin Necklace is directly inspired by the AEGVPTO CAPTA silver denarii issued by Octavian following Rome's conquest of Ptolemaic Egypt. The coin's reverse depicts a crocodile accompanied by the words AEGVPTO CAPTA — “Egypt Captured”. Shinar recreates this powerful ancient image as an irregular golden pendant, preserving both the crocodile and its famous inscription.

THE STORY

The Symbol Of The Crocodile

In 30 BC, the ancient Mediterranean changed forever.

Following the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII, Octavian took control of Egypt, bringing the independent Ptolemaic kingdom to an end and removing the final major obstacle to his dominance of the Roman world.

The victory was commemorated in silver.

Among the coins associated with Octavian's Egyptian victory was an extraordinary denarius bearing one of the simplest and most recognisable images of the period.

On its reverse stands a crocodile.

Above and below it appear two words:

AEGVPTO CAPTA

“Egypt Captured.”

The crocodile served as an immediately recognisable reference to Egypt, transforming the animal into a powerful piece of Roman political imagery. The message needed little explanation: Egypt had fallen under Octavian's control.

Only a few years later, Octavian would receive the name Augustus, becoming the first Roman emperor and beginning a new chapter in Roman history.

The Roman Crocodile Coin Necklace takes this remarkable surviving image and returns it to something that can once again be carried and worn.

The irregular golden pendant retains the ancient crocodile and the AEGVPTO CAPTA inscription, transforming the reverse of a Roman silver denarius into a contemporary jewel.

More than two thousand years later, the little crocodile still tells the story of a moment when the balance of power across the Mediterranean changed forever.

A moment of Roman history, struck in silver and reimagined in gold.
