What should have been an insignificant moment became permanent.

Roman builders continued with their work, and the tile was fired with the paw prints still embedded in its surface. Long after the people who made and used it had disappeared, those small impressions remained.

Tiles marked by dog paw prints have been discovered at archaeological sites across the former Roman world. Unlike monumental sculpture, inscriptions or imperial portraits, they preserve something far more ordinary — the presence of an animal moving through the same streets, workshops and buildings as the people of antiquity.
