Nearly two thousand years ago, somewhere in Roman Gaul, a tile was lying out to dry.

The clay was still soft.

Then a dog walked across it.

Its paws pressed into the wet surface, leaving behind a trail of impressions that nobody intended to preserve.

The tile was later fired, hardening those marks forever.

Today, that ordinary moment survives in the collection of MuseAl at Alba-la-Romaine in southern France: a Roman terracotta roof tile still bearing the paw prints of a dog that passed through before the clay had dried.

It is a small object, but that is what makes it so extraordinary.

Archaeology often tells us about emperors, armies, cities and monuments. Objects like this reveal something quieter — the animals that wandered through Roman workshops, courtyards and streets alongside the people who lived there.

The Roman Puppy Paw Necklace celebrates those accidental traces of everyday life.

Its irregular golden surface recalls a broken fragment of ancient material, while tiny paw prints travel across it as though they have just been pressed into soft clay.

No inscription records the animal's name.

No history tells us who owned it.

Yet its footsteps survived.
