THE STORY

Rubies of Mogok

For generations, Burma — now Myanmar — has been one of the world’s most celebrated sources of ruby.

Among its most famous gemstone regions is Mogok, an area whose name became almost legendary in the history of precious stones. Rubies from this region have long been admired for their vivid colour, rarity and extraordinary beauty.

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Its intense colour has made it one of the most prized gemstones across cultures and centuries, travelling far beyond the landscapes in which it was originally found.

Created exclusively for the British Museum’s Burma to Myanmar exhibition, the Ruby Star Earrings celebrate this extraordinary gemstone tradition.

At the centre of each jewel sits a natural ruby cabochon, surrounded by rich ruby-red ceramic and radiating golden lines. The symmetrical star form allows colour to spread outward from the central stone, turning the ruby into the visual heart of the design.

Rather than reproducing a single historical object, the earrings celebrate the enduring prestige of Burmese ruby itself — a gemstone whose beauty has connected landscape, craftsmanship and luxury for generations.

The result is a pair of radiant red jewels inspired by one of Myanmar’s most famous natural treasures.
