THE STORY

Turquoise of Ancient Egypt

Few colours feel as immediately connected to ancient Egypt as the vivid blue-green of turquoise.

Long before modern jewellery, Egyptian craftsmen were carving this remarkable stone into amulets, beads and ornaments. Its naturally bright colour stood apart from ordinary stone and made turquoise a prized material in a culture where colour carried powerful associations.

Turquoise appears repeatedly in ancient Egyptian jewellery, often alongside gold, carnelian and lapis lazuli. Its blue-green tones were associated with ideas of freshness, vegetation, water and life — colours that held particular meaning in a landscape shaped by the Nile and surrounded by desert.

The stone itself was valuable because it was not simply available everywhere. Ancient Egyptians obtained turquoise from mining areas in the Sinai Peninsula, where expeditions sought the material for use in royal and sacred objects.

A surviving turquoise scarab in The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates to approximately 1981–1550 BC, during the Middle Kingdom to Second Intermediate Period. Carved entirely from turquoise, it preserves the brilliant colour and polished surface that made the gemstone so desirable thousands of years ago.

The Turquoise Pendant Necklace celebrates that same material in a deliberately simple form. Rather than recreating one particular ancient jewel, the design allows the turquoise itself to remain at the centre — its blue-green colour, its markings and the individuality of every stone.

A gemstone admired by the ancient Egyptians, carried forward into something made to be worn today.
